CWEIC’s Strategic Partner, BancTrust & Co. has been appointed as the investment banking partner for Suriname in the distribution of its inaugural Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs), as authorised by the Paris Agreement.
ITMOs allow countries to trade verified emission reductions and manage their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) in carbon offsetting. While ITMOs quantify the reduction or removal of carbon dioxide at a national level, their implementation brings additional environmental benefits, including reversing deforestation, protecting biodiversity, delivering economic, social, and governance benefits to local and indigenous communities and aiding in the sustainable transition of national economies, and fulfilment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
With over 90% forest coverage, Suriname became the first carbon-negative nation to offer ITMOs globally authorised under the 2015 Paris Agreement.
These Sovereign Carbon Credits are fully UNFCCC REDD+ verified and validated at national and international levels. The recipients of the Carbon Credits are allowed to issue and trade their Sovereign Carbon with other countries and the private sector.
