BII-Backed Helios CLEAR Fund Secures $200 Million to Aid Climate Initiatives in Africa

CWEIC’s strategic partner, British International Investment (BII), along with other leading institutions such as The European Investment Bank has successfully anchored the initial funding round for the Helios Climate, Energy Access, and Resilience (CLEAR) Fund. Managed by Helios Investment Partners, the CLEAR Fund aims to accumulate a total of $400 million to become the largest Africa focused climate- investment fund. The CLEAR Fund has secured approximately $200 million in its first close, with catalytic backing from PIDG company InfraCo Africa and the UK’s Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

According to research commissioned by MOBILIST,  by 2031 sub-Saharan Africa’s renewable energy market presents a potential investment opportunity of $193 billion. However, currently, the International Renewable Energy Agency estimates that Africa only attracts 3% of global energy investment.

Helios Investment Partners, a leading private investment firm in Africa and a BII partner since 2007, will direct the capital towards five critical areas:

  • Green energy solutions
  • Climate-smart agriculture & food
  • Green mobility and logistics
  • Recycling and resource efficiency
  • Digital and financial climate enablers

On this occasion, BII’s Managing Director and Head of Africa, Christopher Chijiutomi, said:

“We are delighted to once again partner with Helios Investment Partners to support the growth of African companies. As the UK’s development finance institution, this investment also reinforces BII’s commitment to supporting Africa’s green transition. Mobilising much-needed private capital into green sectors through this Fund will help to drive innovation and create new opportunities, contributing to a resilient and prosperous future for Africa.”
