Sierra Leone Strengthens Ties with the Commonwealth at the 2024 Commonwealth Business Forum

Sierra Leone’s commitment to deepening its engagement with the Commonwealth was underscored at a bilateral meeting held during the 2024 Commonwealth Business Forum in Samoa. In the meeting, President H.E. Julius Maada Bio and CWEIC Chairman Lord Marland agreed on formalising a Strategic Partnership designed to advance Sierra Leone’s development priorities and leverage opportunities across the Commonwealth.

The discussions centred on the “Big Five” priorities identified by President Bio’s administration:

    • Food security – Boosting agricultural productivity to feed the nation.
    • Human capital development – Equipping the youth with essential skills for a dynamic global economy.
    • Youth employment and job creation – Expanding economic opportunities for the country’s young population.
    • Public sector reform – Improving service delivery through innovative governance.
    • Technology infrastructure – Enhancing connectivity and building a resilient digital economy.

President Bio tasked Hon. David Moinina Sengeh, Chief Minister, with finalising the partnership agreement and spearheading initiatives to link Sierra Leone with the Commonwealth’s extensive trade and investment networks. These connections aim to foster partnerships that align with the country’s national development strategy. Also in attendance were senior stakeholders such as Mohamed Bangura – Minister of Youth Affairs, Hon. Isata Mahoi – Minister of Gender, and Pride Azefor – CWEIC Strategic Partnership Director, who emphasised the importance of collaboration in unlocking Sierra Leone’s economic potential.

 

A Platform for Global Dialogue

The meeting took place alongside the President’s participation in the forum’s high-profile session titled “Conversation: Connecting the Commonwealth”. Moderated by Richard Griffiths of ArentFox Schiff LLP, the discussion included perspectives from:

  • H.E. Julius Maada Bio, highlighting Sierra Leone’s economic potential and development vision.
  • Lord Marland of Odstock, emphasizing the Commonwealth’s role in driving inclusive prosperity.
  • Lauren Dreyer, Vice President of Starlink, exploring the transformative power of technology in bridging connectivity gaps.

President Bio’s remarks showcased Sierra Leone as a nation poised for growth, underpinned by strategic reforms, a youthful workforce, and a commitment to innovation.
