The Government of Maldives is a Strategic Partner of the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council. Since Lord Marland’s visit to the Maldives in February, CWEIC has been committed to supporting the modernisation of the Maldives’ financial sector. Hosted by Vincent Keaveny CBE, former Lord Mayor of the City of London, at DLA Piper, CWEIC was pleased to convene UK financial institutions for a roundtable with H.E. Mohamed Saeed, the Maldives Minister for Economic Development and Trade.
The Government of Maldives is embarking on a journey to reform and modernise their financial sector through robust policy initiatives, including the establishment of the Maldives International Financial Services Authority, and the establishment of a Maldives Development Bank. This roundtable brought together experts from the UK’s financial institutions and the Commonwealth investment community to share expertise, opportunities, regulatory insights, and best practice.
Participants emphasised the importance of fostering competitiveness in both the construction and implementation of financial policies, highlighting the necessity of a competitive regulatory edge. Additionally, there was a consensus on the need for the Government of the Maldives to remain responsive to changes in the global economic landscape.
Thank you to Mohamed Ali Janah, Principal Advisor to the President on Trade and Investment, and our newly appointed Chair of the Maldives Hub for his support on bringing this together.
We look forward to continuing our collaboration with the Government as they advance further with these development initiatives.
