Fortescue Executive Chairman Andrew Forrest Calls for Urgent Green Energy Transition

Andrew Forrest, Founder and Executive Chairman of Fortescue, is doubling down on his mission to eliminate fossil fuels and accelerate the global shift to renewable energy. In a recent TIME feature, Forrest made a compelling case for the urgency of this transition, stating, “We need to do what’s technically possible, and that is to completely replace fossil fuels.” Fortescue is actively progressing renewable energy initiatives across Australia, South America, and Africa, reflecting its ambition to drive the transition to a cleaner global economy while delivering sustainable economic growth.

Fortescue, which started as one of the world’s largest iron ore producers, is now at the forefront of the green energy revolution. The company is investing heavily in green hydrogen, large-scale renewable projects, and innovative clean energy solutions to help industries move away from carbon-intensive fuels. “We’ve hit a tipping point,” Forrest told TIME. “Countries and businesses that don’t act now will be left behind.”

As a newly announced CWEIC Strategic Partner, Fortescue’s vision aligns with the Commonwealth’s growing emphasis on sustainable investment, energy security, and economic resilience. Many Commonwealth nations—particularly in Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific—are rich in renewable energy potential but require strategic investment and partnerships to unlock their full capacity. Fortescue’s expertise presents a significant opportunity for these markets to scale up their clean energy infrastructure.

Forrest is clear that the transition is not just about sustainability but also about economic opportunity. “The world will be a far wealthier place without fossil fuels,” he emphasised. Through CWEIC’s network, we look forward to supporting partnerships that drive sustainable investment and energy resilience across the Commonwealth.
